Inflection AI, a startup based in Palo Alto and founded by DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, has just released its AI chatbot ‘Pi’ as a dedicated app on Android. This step aims to reach billions of users and is part of the young company’s strategy to compete with OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT and other emerging AI assistants like xAI’s Grok and Anthropic’s Claude.

The company has also improved the app’s look and feel, with minor changes in colors, illustrations, and the Pi logo. They’ve maintained the sleek, clean aesthetic users loved on the iOS version, adding some new flair.

The Pi Android app is available in 35 countries, including the U.S., and aims to deliver an experience similar to the iOS version. Users can ask questions on any topic to receive instant answers, suggestions, or tips. Additionally, the Pi chatbot supports voice interactions, allowing users to speak and receive spoken replies, making the interaction feel like a phone conversation. There are six Pi voice options to choose from, enhancing user experience.

Launched in May, Pi has been running on the Inflection-1 language model. A major upgrade to Inflection-2 is planned, promising better factual knowledge, stylistic control, and reasoning capabilities.

Inflection AI aims to make Pi a more personal and conversational assistant than competitors like ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing, or Google’s Bard. Pi is designed to offer 24/7 emotional support and guidance, making it a unique companion. It’s there for you, whether you need someone to talk to late at night, want to practice a new language, or seek advice about a career change.

The decision to launch Pi on Android is expected to increase Inflection AI’s reach, tapping into Android’s massive user base of over 3 billion. However, it will face competition from ChatGPT, which has a large and established user base on both Android and iOS, with 1.7 billion visits and 193 million unique users in October 2023 alone. Other competitors include Google’s Bard, Anthropic’s Claude, and Elon Musk’s xAI Grok, which benefits from real-time data integration and a unique personality.
