Sony is working on an electric car called Afeela with Honda, set to debut in 2025. At a recent press conference, Sony announced a partnership with Microsoft to incorporate AI and other technologies into the car as it prepares for launch.

Izumi Kawanishi from Sony showed the progress of the car, which was first announced a couple of years ago at CES. At CES 2024, Kawanishi drove the Afeela car onto the stage using a PlayStation 5 game controller.

The car is packed with technology for gamers, featuring bright front dashboard screens displaying cool images. The backseat has screens for passengers to play games as well.

Microsoft executive Jessica Hawk joined Kawanishi on stage to discuss the partnership, which will involve AI technology and Microsoft’s Azure computing infrastructure. This collaboration between Sony and Microsoft aims to redefine the relationship between people and mobility.

Sony also collaborated with Polyphony Digital to use their virtual game car driving experience in the car’s development. Sony seems to view the Afeela project as another platform for gaming.

Kawanishi mentioned that Qualcomm will provide safety technology, including advanced driver assistance system programs. Additionally, Sony showcased a new head-mounted display (a virtual reality headset) designed for content creation, which was also presented at the Siemens keynote.
