Google Looks to Gemini AI to Revitalize Its Struggling Bard Assistant

Google is aiming to bring new life to its conversational assistant Bard, which previously failed to meet expectations. Bard was launched with a lot of excitement earlier this year as Google’s answer to ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. However, it quickly became clear that Bard’s responses were frequently limited, inaccurate, and prone to errors, leading to significant criticism on social media for its substandard performance compared to its competitors.

To address these issues, Google is integrating its new Gemini AI model into Bard. According to Google, Gemini surpasses top AI models like GPT-3.5 in several benchmarks, particularly in understanding and reasoning.

Google plans to implement these upgrades in two phases. First, a tuned version of Gemini Pro will enhance Bard’s conversational abilities by improving its ability to understand questions and offer relevant, nuanced answers. This update is available starting today. Then, early next year, Bard will gain access to Gemini Ultra, the most advanced AI model yet from Google.

The rapid need to upgrade Bard likely stems from its initially disappointing performance, which hurt Google’s reputation in the AI field. By integrating Gemini, Google hopes to restore Bard’s value and prove its competitiveness in generative AI.

However, there are risks involved. Like other large language models, Gemini could potentially spread misinformation and toxic content. Although Google asserts that it is rigorously testing Gemini, ensuring AI safety remains a complex challenge.

If Gemini lives up to its promise and significantly improves Bard, Google could regain its competitive edge in the AI race. As the field of generative AI evolves quickly, the competition for supremacy is still very much open. For now, Google is relying on Gemini to bring Bard back into the competition.
