Roblox has shared more information about its work on AI tools, specifically its advancements in creating 4D generative AI. The company explained that the fourth dimension of generative AI is interaction, which involves AI creations dynamically interacting with their environment. This innovation would enable game developers to create scenarios for unscripted interactions within the game world.
Morgan McGuire, Roblox’s chief scientist, detailed the current state of the company’s creation tools in a blog post. He highlighted that Roblox’s strength lies in interaction—among people, objects, and environments. Unlike traditional online video games, Roblox uses a powerful runtime engine with a unique programming and simulation model focused on interaction. This model is inspired by the concept of a metaverse, where elements interact in complex and spontaneous ways, rather than in limited, predefined ways.
McGuire also mentioned that Roblox is tackling some challenges to achieve 4D generative AI, which include functionality, control, and interactivity. The generated objects and the generation process need to work as developers anticipate while making sense within the interactive world. Roblox is training its AI generator in a multimodal fashion and incorporating purpose-built optimizers.
Roblox founder David Baszucki elaborated on how a 4D generative AI-created object would function. For example, he described a race car equipped with an engine, moveable parts, and a physics rig that allows it to drive down a track—all generated from a simple text or voice prompt.
