Withings, a digital health company, recently unveiled its BeamO “multiscope,” a device capable of performing four health checks in less than a minute. This innovative device combines the functionalities of a thermometer, electrocardiogram, oximeter, and stethoscope, surpassing the capabilities of typical fitness watches and single-purpose devices.
The goal of BeamO is to enable more health checks at home, allowing patients to discuss results with doctors during remote consultations, thus enhancing telemedicine efficiency. Withings aims to make temperature checks, traditionally the most common home health scan, a thing of the past by introducing BeamO as the new go-to device for monitoring heart and lung health simultaneously.
Based in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France, Withings will showcase this technology at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. Although there will be considerable competition from other digital health companies at the event, Withings is confident in BeamO’s potential. Last year, the company gained attention at CES 2023 with its urinalysis tool using toilet readings.
BeamO brings essential health checks normally conducted during doctor visits into the hands of consumers, pending FDA approval in the United States. Combining ECG, oximeter, stethoscope, and thermometer functions, BeamO turns a simple household item into a powerful health monitoring tool. It’s portable, smaller than a smartphone, and designed to help individuals and families conduct at-home checkups, significantly improving telehealth consults.
Eric Carreel, president of Withings, points out that BeamO will revolutionize home health checks, providing vital health data and potential early warnings of health issues, which people can monitor daily rather than a few times a year during clinical visits.
BeamO uses advanced sensor technology, including photoplethysmography (PPG) and electrodes to measure blood oxygenation (SpO2), heart rate, and conduct a medical-grade 1-lead ECG. Users can start health measurements by lightly gripping BeamO, with results displayed in real-time on its LED screen.
Additionally, BeamO offers precise body temperature readings through a noninvasive scan of the temporal artery, thanks to the new Thermo sensor technology that enhances sensitivity and accuracy. The digital stethoscope feature allows users to capture acoustic sound waves via a Piezoelectric disc, which can be streamed to doctors during telehealth sessions to guide device placement.
With these combined features, BeamO can perform a comprehensive health checkup of body temperature, heart, and lung health in under a minute. It can alert users to potential fevers, infections, and cardiovascular issues, including atrial fibrillation (pending FDA clearance).
Health data from BeamO automatically syncs with the Withings app via Wi-Fi, creating comprehensive health records. This app allows tracking of personal and family health over time, with features for monitoring medications, setting reminders, and sharing medical histories with doctors. Multiple family members can also create individual profiles to share Withings devices.
BeamO, honored as a CES Innovations Award recipient, will be available for demonstration at CES. Retailing at $250, it will launch in June 2024, following FDA clearance. Withings, founded in 2009, continues to innovate in the field of digital health.
