OpenAI’s co-founder and CEO Sam Altman has shared his thoughts on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. He has specifically expressed support for Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian tech workers who feel unsafe to share their experiences. Altman, who is a U.S.-born Jew, highlighted on Elon Musk’s social platform X that many Muslim and Arab colleagues in the tech industry feel uncomfortable discussing their recent experiences, often fearing retaliation and potential damage to their careers. He emphasized the importance of unity within the industry to support these colleagues.

Altman also addressed the issue of antisemitism, mentioning that Jews, including himself, are increasingly targeted by antisemitic sentiments. He appreciated the support he has received from the industry but noted that there is significantly less support for Muslims.

Nearly a month ago, Altman admitted on X that he had underestimated the extent of antisemitism, especially within the American Left, acknowledging it is worse than he previously believed.

Recently, in response to a query, Altman stated that OpenAI’s ChatGPT should treat Jews and Muslims equally when it comes to humor. There have been criticisms from figures like UK-Iraqi writer Mona Chalabi, who noted that ChatGPT had different responses regarding Israel and Palestine, seemingly favoring Israel.

Altman’s statement is noteworthy as it stands out among the few high-profile tech leaders’ statements supporting Palestinians, Muslims, and Arabs amidst Israel’s military actions against Hamas. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and displacement on both sides.

Altman’s comments follow another controversy involving OpenAI’s Head of Research Platform, Tal Broda, who posted messages in support of Israel’s military campaign. Broda’s remarks were met with condemnation from Palestinians and their supporters.

As with any large organization, OpenAI hosts a variety of perspectives on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Altman’s public support for Palestinians marks a significant political stance that may contrast with others within his firm and the broader tech community.
