Generative AI is evolving rapidly, and Deloitte has released the first edition of a new quarterly survey to explore its impact on businesses. The report, titled “The State of Generative AI in the Enterprise: Now Decides Next,” gathered insights from 2,800 respondents ranging from directors to C-suite executives across six industries and sixteen countries.

One major finding from the survey revealed that while 79% of respondents are optimistic about generative AI transforming their organizations within the next three years, their immediate focus is on gaining practical benefits. More than half of the business and tech leaders are worried that widespread use of generative AI will centralize global economic power and increase economic inequality. Additionally, the lack of technical talent is viewed as the biggest barrier to AI adoption, followed by issues with regulatory compliance and governance.

Business leaders are also concerned about the societal impacts of generative AI. Beena Ammanath, global head of the Deloitte AI Institute, mentioned that it was encouraging to see how business leaders are considering these broader impacts. The survey showed a significant number of respondents believe in the need for more regulation and collaboration, which suggests a balanced approach to AI development that includes societal considerations alongside business value creation.

In other highlights, Ammanath was surprised to find that many organizations are still relying heavily on generic AI solutions rather than developing specialized, industry-specific ones. She expects this to change as the technology matures. The survey also noted that organizations with higher expertise in generative AI feel more positive about the technology but also experience greater pressure to keep up with competitors.

Looking ahead, the Deloitte survey will be an ongoing quarterly effort to monitor trends and changes in the generative AI landscape. This first survey aims to establish a strong baseline for future reports.
