The use of AI, especially generative AI, in game development has sparked debate. Both players and developers have raised concerns about using AI, but some see it as the next big thing for the gaming industry. At GamesBeat Next, a panel moderated by Jon Radoff from Beamable discussed the role of generative AI in the future of game development.

Radoff kicked off the discussion by highlighting the benefits of generative AI, not just for speeding up game creation. Kylan Gibbs, Chief Product Officer at Inworld AI, mentioned that AI is generally used in two areas: design time and run time. While there are clear applications for AI in design, Inworld AI focuses more on run time. Improving run time can enhance the player experience and lead to increased revenue and playtime, beyond just cutting design costs.

Stefano Corazza, head of Roblox Studio, talked about how AI can offer more flexibility in game creation, boosting creativity. He mentioned that once you have the basic elements of a game, AI can help you experiment with different visual styles quickly. In the future, you might be able to completely reskin a game in seconds just by changing a prompt, which opens up a lot of creative possibilities.

Negar Shaghahi, CEO of Auxuman, spoke about their Auxworld platform, which uses generative AI to create single-player games. She noted that most gamers prefer playing games to creating them and enjoy sharing these experiences with others. About 10% of their users are streamers who use the platform to create engaging content for their communities. This results in a more interactive experience, making players feel more involved.

Gibbs added that games are gradually allowing players to make more decisions. Game creators set up the world and core storyline but give players the freedom to interact in their own ways. This leads to a variety of unique experiences within the same game, which can expand the streaming ecosystem as well.

Shaghahi also pointed out that traditional game artistry will remain, but the rise of AI makes creating niche content less risky. With AI, games can be developed more easily, allowing culture to influence gaming more quickly, similar to social media.
