16 Cybersecurity Experts Anticipate the Impact of Gen AI on Cyber Defense in 2024

As AI becomes more powerful, it also gets more complex, particularly for CISOs incorporating generative AI. Cybersecurity vendors can harness this enhanced AI power to mitigate the risks of falling behind in the AI landscape. However, new ways of weaponizing AI, combined with social engineering tactics, have exposed vulnerabilities in many leading companies.

VentureBeat engaged with 16 cybersecurity leaders from 13 companies to discuss their forecasts for 2024. They emphasized the importance of fostering strong collaboration between AI and cybersecurity experts. Human insight is vital for AI to effectively combat cyber threats. MITRE MDR stress tests validate that human intelligence, when combined with AI, can identify and neutralize breaches before they escalate.

Leaders in the field anticipate generative AI’s significant impact on cybersecurity. Peter Silva from Ericom suggests that AI can recognize attack patterns and behaviors indicating breaches, though it might also make it harder to discern human from AI-generated phishing attempts.

Elia Zaitsev from CrowdStrike predicts threat actors will target AI systems in 2024 through vulnerabilities and unauthorized AI tool usage by employees. Organizations will need to internally assess where AI has been introduced, both officially and unofficially, and develop guidelines for secure AI usage to minimize risks.

Rob Gurzeev from CyCognito warns that over-reliance on AI might lead to a lack of human oversight, creating potential security gaps. Howard Ting from Cyberhaven highlights that some employees are already pasting confidential data into AI tools like ChatGPT, raising significant data protection concerns.

John Morello from Gutsy believes AI can help manage overwhelming amounts of security event data, making it more accessible. Jason Urso from Honeywell points out that generative AI lowers the barrier for less skilled hackers to develop sophisticated malware and phishing attacks. Urso foresees AI dynamically defending critical infrastructure by adjusting security configurations in response to the evolving threat landscape.

Srinivas Mukkamala from Ivanti emphasizes the anxiety AI might cause workers about job security, stressing the need for transparency from business leaders on AI implementation. He also predicts more sophisticated social engineering attacks as AI tools become more accessible.

Merritt Baer from Lacework reassures that while AI will change the nature of work, it will augment, not replace, human creativity and innovation. Ankur Shah from Palo Alto Networks notes that AI’s ability to stop risks depends on having robust security data to train on.

Matt Kraning from Cortex, Palo Alto Networks highlights that AI will enable more user-friendly interaction with complex data, assisting security analysts. Christophe Van de Weyer from Telesign warns that in 2024, distinguishing between legitimate and fraudulent emails will become increasingly difficult, prompting businesses to bolster their defenses.

Rob Robinson from Telstra Purple EMEA sees AI as ideally suited to tackle security industry challenges like threat detection and response, transforming the required skills for CISOs. Vineet Arora from WinWire predicts generative AI will automate many security tasks, allowing analysts to focus on complex problems, while also warning of sophisticated AI-driven attacks.

Claudionor Coelho and Sanjay Kalra from Zscaler foresee generative AI automating compliance processes, significantly impacting the sector. Clint Dixon from a large logistics organization envisions AI-driven cybersecurity due to the complexity and volume of data, making manual oversight impractical.
