Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) content creation and editing tools today. They introduced two new tools: Emu Edit for image editing and Emu Video for video generation.
These tools were developed under Meta’s Expressive Media Universe (Emu) project, which was first revealed in September. The new AI tools aim to bring more intuitive and creative features to Meta’s social apps like Facebook and Instagram.
Emu Edit: Enhancing Image Editing
The first major advancement, Emu Edit, offers refined control over image editing. It allows users to input text-based instructions to make changes to images, similar to Adobe Photoshop’s “generative fill” feature.
Emu Edit can perform various editing tasks including local and global editing, background addition or removal, color and shape transformations, object detection, and segmentation. The tool is designed to modify only the areas relevant to the edit request, leaving unrelated pixels untouched.
Trained on a large dataset of 10 million synthesized samples, Emu Edit is capable of delivering high-quality, faithful results. For example, if a user wants to add the text “Aloha!” to a baseball cap image, Emu Edit will do so without altering the cap itself.
Emu Video: Simplifying Text-to-Video Generation
In addition to image editing, Meta’s AI team has also advanced video generation. Emu Video, based on diffusion models, simplifies the process of generating videos from text inputs. It can respond to text-only, image-only, or combined inputs.
The process starts with creating an image from a text prompt, then generating a video based on that image and an additional text prompt. These new tools are expected to transform how users interact with their images and videos on social media platforms. Users could create animated stickers, GIFs, or edit photos without needing complex software like Photoshop.
Meta’s Emu-powered tools signify the company’s growing focus on generative AI, complementing other initiatives such as Make-A-Video and the AI image generator DALL-E. By providing intuitive features, Meta aims to expand artistic possibilities for general users.
Emu Video and Emu Edit rollouts are part of Meta’s strategy to enhance engagement across its apps. These in-platform editing and creation tools are designed to keep users more engaged within Meta’s social ecosystem.
While the new tools promise increased creativity, there are also concerns around AI ethics and content oversight. Meta has indicated that it will prioritize safeguards to prevent potential misuse of these generative models.
Currently, Emu Video and Emu Edit are still in development, with no confirmed release date. However, Meta’s ongoing generative AI research suggests that social media experiences will continue to evolve. In the future, users might produce professional-grade content as easily as sending a text message.
